October Sky Rock The Annex WreckRoom

Montreal band October Sky rocked The Annex WreckRoom Wednesday night, in association with Indie Can radio showcase.

After being featured on the Plus Sur Commande (the Musique Plus version of Much on Demand) for their video of Hit the Ground off their Hell Isn't My Home album, October Sky started gaining momentum.

"Next we were featured on Much Loud and then radio started picking us up more," said keyboardist Yanik Rouleau before they took the stage. "Toronto is our second home.

"But our studio is in Montreal. We went back there to practice and do the album in a home studio, keeping our costs down. We're trying to build a really big fan base in Toronto."

The World Provider Knows Feist

Not to sell the electro-pop of Montreal's The World Provider short but all things considered, this seems like the most obvious way to promote the band. Feist sings on "Valentine", the first track on The World Provider's new album Hard Feelings. It's a really good song, by the way.

What else is good about The World Provider? If you like quirky, new wavey synth melodies with a little rock thrown in you'll definitely want to check out their album and their show tomorrow night at the Drake.

Murder, She Podcasted, a Toronto-based podcast, has become one of my favourites, and one that I can listen to over and over.

Full of disco tendencies, guilty pleasures and basically anything that goes, artist and designer Pieter Hansderson aka Dj Fletcher has turned a little hobby of his into something substantial.

The Rural Alberta Advantage Selected By eMusic

I have heard only good things about the three people that constitute <a href="http://www.theraa.com/"target="_blank">The Rural Alberta Advantage (RAA) and even better things about their live performances. In fact, this is the second interview that <a href="http://www.blogto.com/music/2008/03/call_response_the_rural_alberta_advantage/"target="_blank">this website has done in 2008 with frontman Nils Edenloff.

In March, Nils met up with us to discuss RAA's debut record, Hometowns, and to provide some background information on the band's beginnings and development. Now, he's back to talk about how the talented trio was selected as one of <a href="http://www.emusic.com/artist/The-Rural-Alberta-Advantage-MP3-Download/12114702.html"target="_blank">eMusic's two November bands to be profiled, and what, if any, impact that this has had.

We met in the Green Room, a dark Annex cafe, only accessible by a back alley that runs off of Brunswick Ave. It's a very student friendly environment, which is my way of saying that it offers an affordable menu of food and beverages. I ordered a Steamwhistle, because it reminds me of the keg parties I used to host and attend in my days of yore. Nils ordered a Creemore because it was what he wanted.

Then we got down to serious business, starting with an explanation of how RAA came to be selected by eMusic.

Call & Response: DJ Medley

Local DJ/remixer Matt Medley is one of the hardest working DJ's in Toronto right now. His popular ReMc's of the Week blog posts include the hottest remixes he can find and he has started posting mash-ups of his own.

He's been running two successful weeklies (with more on the way) and has started playing more high profile gigs - the most impressive of which takes place this Friday at CiRCA when Medley will spin the main room ahead of Junior Sanchez from New York.

I spoke to Medley about his mash-ups, his increasingly busy DJ schedule, and preparing for his CiRCA set.

Carmen and Camille Are So Hot Right Now, Just Not In Canada

The girls, <a href="http://carmenandcamille.com/"target="_blank">Carmen and Camille, are two Canadians from Vancouver who have been writing their own songs since they were five. And let me tell you something: they are not five years old anymore.

The show was running a bit late, and I wondered if I could go outside quickly. I was told that we were "just waiting for Jane". I said okay, and left the back area to find myself face-to-face with <a href="http://www.genesimmons.com/"target="_blank">Gene Simmons. Ohhhh. GENE not JANE.

Spookey Ruben Goes Mechanical On New Album

After relocating to LA for years to work on various music projects, Spookey has returned to Toronto with a new record called Mechanical Royalty (Hi-Hat Recordings). It's a concept album about a kingdom of robots who are attacked by the humans who originally created them because they possess a magnetic force that keeps harmony in society that the humans want back for themselves. In case it's not yet obvious - it's a prog rock record. Spookey releases Mechanical Royalty this Thursday at the Horseshoe.

The Horseshoe Tavern! Hey Rosetta! Exclamation Mark!

The New Newcleus

Classic (and I mean really classic) hip-hop and electro heads can rejoice in the fact that Brooklyn based synth pioneers Newcleus are swinging by Wrongbar this Saturday to throw down a set as part of ACTIVATOR, DMONEY's bi-monthly showcase dedicated to 70's and 80's RnB, early electro and hip-hop, funk/boogie and the music it has inspired.

First, let's rewind some 30 years. It began in 1977 as a group of teenagers throwing one-off DIY parties under the DJ collective Jam On Productions. As punk was exploding across the pond and just starting to take foot in New York City, this group was pumping out breaks and beats, later leading to the breakdancing craze. In 1981 four core members, Cozmo D, Lady E, Chilly B and Niqué D, decided to create a recording group and their sounds soon became underground classics in night clubs around the world. Jam On Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song) (audio below) was the first single released n 1983, and it is still being sampled and mashed up today. They had also established themselves as one of the first self-contained Hip-Hop bands, playing all of the instruments themselves live.

Now let's fast track to today. This Toronto show is one of only a few the band are playing, and actually the first time they have ever played here, or anywhere in Canada.

Lioness: A High School Reunion

And what high school reunion is complete without drinks? So there we were. Sitting at Harry's Char Broil and Grill in Parkdale, enjoying $2.50 Labatt 50s, talking about who kept in touch with who, when suddenly it hit me.
